John L. Harvey was a steadfast advocate for justice, both within the church and in the world at large. Born and bred in the Church of the Brethren, John was raised with an inherent understanding that the role of all people is to seek to be a voice for justice and peace in our communities and our world.
John was born in Syracuse, New York in 1971. He lived in La Verne, California for 22 years and attended the University of California, Irvine. He served in Brethren Volunteer Service for three years and was the director for the Washington, D.C. office for the Church of the Brethren. He was a student in the master of divinity program at Bethany Theological Seminary and completed a residency program in hospital chaplaincy at Sharpe Memorial Hospital in San Diego. He was a member of the La Verne Church of the Brethren and a licensed minister.
After attending a Womaen’s Caucus meeting in September of 2000 in La Verne, John became passionate about the issue of the need for discussion and dialogue about the Church of the Brethren name. As part of a committee at the La Verne Church of the Brethren, John was the major author of a query that put forth an insistence on a reconsideration of the denominational name.
John’s fiancé, Carla Kilgore, began the John L. Harvey “Include The Sisters” Memorial Fund as a recognition of the work with which John was actively involved at the time of his death in November, 2000. Many of the name change resources and materials found on this web site and also in the “Continuing The Conversation” packet were funded by this memorial tribute to John.
John was honored with the 2001 “Friend of Caucus” award at the Womaen’s Caucus Luncheon at Annual Conference as recognition of work that he accomplished in his short life, and also as an affirmation of the legacy that he left.
